In Thom Hogan’s review of the Nikon D7000, there’s some interesting comments about how the capabilities of the latest sensors are starting to show the limits of some lenses. In particular Thom says that the D7000 makes the Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 seem a mediocre performer.
The D7000 has a 16MP (Sony) sensor, and I can vouch that the Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 seems plenty sharp enough on a 10MP body. The A77 is expected to have 24MP so may push the capabilities of lenses even further.
